FastForm AiForm-G2 Green Laser SLM 3D Printer
FastForm AiForm-G2 is a selective laser melting system with 500 W green lasers, designed for producing functional parts from pure copper. Typical products include cold plates, heat exchangers, liquid cooling components and other designs with complex internal cavities. The 300 × 300 × 400 mm chamber can hold either one large part or several items in a single cycle.
Key advantages of the FastForm AiForm-G2 Green Laser
- Efficient energy absorption. Copper powder absorbs green radiation better than infrared. As a result, melting is more stable and the parts come out dense.
- Density of up to 99.9%. This is critical for heat dissipation systems: pores reduce thermal conductivity and create a risk of coolant leakage.
- Large build volume. The chamber is suitable for large heat exchangers, cold plates and series production batches.
- Precise scanning. Repeatability of ≤2 µrad and Z-axis positioning accuracy of <±0.03 mm make it possible to reproduce fine and complex structures.
- Internal channels in a monolithic part. Microchannels, manifolds, thin fins and TPMS structures are formed without brazing or assembly.
- Platform heating up to 200 °C. Stability of ±0.1 °C helps keep the temperature under control throughout the entire print.
- Powder management for long cycles. The built-in 40 l feed system, 60 l overflow container and optional hopper allow operation without frequent stops.
Why copper requires a green laser
Pure copper conducts heat better than most structural metals. That is why heat exchangers, cooling plates and power electronics components are made from it. However, in the near-infrared range copper reflects light strongly. A significant portion of the energy does not reach the powder, and the process becomes unstable if the parameters are not selected precisely. In the FastForm AiForm-G2, this problem is solved by the green laser. Copper absorbs its radiation more efficiently, so the powder receives more useful energy and the melt pool behaves more predictably. The result is dense parts (up to 99.9%) with complex channels, thin walls and integrated heat exchange structures. Productivity is 10–25 cm³/h per laser. The actual speed depends on the part geometry, layer thickness, laser parameters and scanning strategy.
Build area for series production
The 300 × 300 × 400 mm chamber is suitable for extended copper products. These include cold plates, manifolds and heat exchangers with long coolant channels and complex cavities. If the parts are smaller, they can be placed on the platform together and printed in a single pass. SLM makes it possible to combine several functional elements into one monolithic structure. This reduces the number of joints, simplifies assembly and reduces the number of places where coolant could leak. For long production tasks, the powder management system has the following capacities:
- 40 l — built-in metal powder feed system.
- 40 l — additional external hopper (optional).
- 60 l — container for excess powder.
This configuration is designed for large parts and long print cycles.
Print accuracy and process stability
The printer combines high-precision laser scanning with precise platform positioning. Scanning repeatability is ≤2 µrad, Z-axis accuracy is <±0.03 mm, and the maximum scanning speed reaches 10 m/s. This affects the quality of thin walls and small channels, where even a slight deviation changes the hydraulic and thermal characteristics of the part.
Dimensional accuracy
- ±0.1 mm — for dimensions up to and including 100 mm.
- ±0.1% of the dimension — for parts over 100 mm.
Print accuracy and process stability. The printer combines high-precision laser scanning with precise platform positioning.
Layer thickness and temperature control
Layer thickness can be varied within the range of 20–80 µm. Thin layers render complex geometry better, while thick layers speed up printing. The platform heats up to 200 °C with a stability of ±0.1 °C, which maintains consistent laser melting conditions from the first layer to the last.
Microchannels and complex heat exchange structures
The main advantage of the AiForm-G2 is copper parts with internal geometry that machining reproduces with difficulty or cannot reproduce at all. The following elements can be incorporated into the design:
- Cooling microchannels. Compact coolant channels next to the surfaces from which heat needs to be removed.
- Branched flow systems. Channels and manifolds that distribute coolant between several cooling zones.
- Channels with variable cross-section. Geometry that adapts the coolant flow to the design of the part.
- TPMS structures. Triply periodic minimal surfaces with a large contact area that improve heat exchange efficiency.
- Thin-walled fins. Compact structures with an increased heat transfer area for heat exchangers and cooling systems.
The high thermal conductivity of copper combined with additive manufacturing makes it possible to create compact heat exchange units with integrated channels and functional elements.
