The Formlabs Fuse 1 Optical Barrier is a variable element of the SLS printer's laser system, designed to protect the internal optics from contamination during work with polymer powder. The cartridge is located between the working chamber and the optical node of the equipment, thus it is exposed to the impact of dust and material particles that are formed during the printing process. The main task of this part is to prevent contaminants from reaching the laser and galvanometric mirrors. A clean and transparent surface of the optical cartridge ensures normal passage of laser radiation to the working area, which is important for stable and accurate sintering of the powder material. Over time, the protective element may lose its initial properties due to operational load. Scratches, chips, mechanical damage or signs of wear of the protective layer may appear on the surface. A separate problem is the gradual accumulation of polymer dust: if even after cleaning the glass remains cloudy and not transparent enough, it is advisable to replace the cartridge.
