Formlabs Alumina 4N for 3D printing heat and chemical resistant elements

A New Era for Affordable Technical Ceramics

Alumina 4N resin has been developed to meet the technical demands of the high-end engineering market.

The components of the resin are specially designed to work together from printing through to processing, firing, and final properties. This ecosystem and technology enable extraordinary performance of aluminum oxide parts, with the design flexibility and lead times of 3D printing at a fraction of the cost of leading alternatives.

Many industries rely on technical ceramics for heat, electrical, abrasion, and chemical resistance, but the main challenges are the cost and time required for traditional production, which limits design freedom compared to 3D printing. Traditional ceramic 3D printers can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and require specialized operators. With Alumina 4N Resin, anyone can now use ceramic 3D printing, eliminating the need for costly tooling and molds, enabling design freedom, lower production costs, and faster turnaround times. Thanks to the Formlabs SLA ecosystem, previously impossible ceramic projects are now accessible to all.

Applications

Alumina 4N Resin allows you to easily incorporate ceramic 3D printing into your workflows, enabling affordable production of parts with complex geometries and low entry barriers. Print ceramic components with internal channels, lattice structures, and intricate geometries not possible with traditional alumina. This material produces highly efficient products with exceptional thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties that are comparable to conventionally made alumina.

  • High-voltage components: enclosures, connector housings and covers, terminal blocks.
  • Chemically resistant components: collector pipes, mixing blades, pipes.
  • Heat-resistant components: spark plug insulators, electrical wiring, insulating housings or tubes.
  • Metal casting tools: cores, crucibles, mixing tools, thermocouple jackets, metal filters.

Washing Printed Parts with Alumina 4N

Important: Do not allow Alumina 4N resin parts to come into contact with water or IPA, as this will cause cracking. Clean printed Alumina 4N parts only with Formlabs Ceramic Wash Solution.

Firing Process for Alumina 4N Resin Parts

The firing process consists of two stages: firing and sintering. The firing stage slowly burns out all polymer material in the printed parts, including all photo-curable material. This process is slow, taking several days at temperatures ranging from 150 °C to 600 °C to allow the material to off-gas without creating excessive pressure.

After that, we raise the temperature to 1000 °C for light pre-sintering. The sintering process transitions the loosely bonded powder into a fully consolidated, dense part. This step is quicker, with the main limiting factor being the time it takes for the ceramic to heat evenly.

Storing the Resin Cartridge

Refrigerated storage is recommended for long-term storage, extending shelf life to 12 months (at room temperature, it's 3 months). Refrigeration will not affect the properties of the material as long as it is warmed to room temperature before use. Shake the cartridge briefly (5-10 seconds) when first used, and again after more than a month of non-use. If the material has been in the tank for over a month, gently stir it with a non-damaging tool to reincorporate any settled material.
