Metal3D Metalsys 180 SLM 3D Printer
Metal3D Metalsys 180 3D Printer is a small class SLM printer for small batch production of metal parts with a working area of 180 × 180 × 150 mm. This model bridges the gap between laboratory tasks and stable production loads. It offers a larger build area and the ability to increase productivity thanks to the Dual Laser option. Such a design provides a practical balance between compactness and production flexibility.
The Metal3D Metalsys 180 3D printer comes with pre-configured precision optics and integrates support for leading CAM platforms for task preparation. This ensures process stability and reduces the time from design to mass production.
Functionality
Technology and working principle
The Metal3D Metalsys 180 is based on Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technology in the Powder Bed Fusion system. A 200W fiber laser selectively melts the metal powder layer by layer, forming compact, dense parts with minimal porosity. Each print cycle consists of sequential powder application, laser scanning, and cooling - this process is repeated until the full height of the product is reached.
Optical system and scanning
The printer is equipped with an F-theta Lens and a high-speed scanner, which provide a focus diameter of 40-100 μm. Such precision of optics allows achieving clear geometry of parts even with dense layout of products on the platform. The scanning speed of up to 7 m/s minimizes the exposure duration of each layer, supporting the synergy between quality and productivity.
Configuration and flexibility of the laser system
The basic configuration of the Metal3D Metalsys 180 3D printer contains one 200W fiber laser. The Dual Laser option, which doubles the peak productivity, is available if desired. Such modularity allows the operator to choose the configuration according to the specifics of the load. It covers stable single and small batch production or intensive scenarios where the speed of cycle execution is critical.
Software and task preparation
The printer supports leading CAM platforms: VoxelDance Additive and Materialise Magics. These software systems provide model preparation for printing, optimization of part layout on the platform, and process monitoring. Compatibility with standard export formats (STL, STEP, SLC, CLI) simplifies integration into existing R&D workflows. This simplifies production conveyors for the Metal3D Metalsys 180 3D printer.
Material compatibility
The Metal3D Metalsys 180 3D printer works with a wide range of metal powders: aluminum, titanium, stainless steel, tool steel, nickel, cobalt-chrome, and superalloys. Such material flexibility allows choosing the optimal material for the mechanical requirements of the part, from lightweight aviation components to heat-resistant turbine blades.
Power supply and infrastructure
The printer is powered by a standard single-phase 220V AC socket, 20A. The average power consumption is 1.5 kW. The SLM metallurgical process requires a constant supply of inert gas (nitrogen or argon) at a rate of 20 l/min. This prevents oxidation of the melt. When planning the installation, it is necessary to provide a reliable gas infrastructure and tightness of the chamber.
Safety and certification
The Metal3D Metalsys 180 3D printer has received international certificates: KC (Korea), CE (Europe), TUV, and ANAB. These certificates confirm compliance with electrical safety, environmental safety, and production quality requirements. The printer has also received patent recognition, which attests to the innovativeness of the technical design.
Areas of application
- Small batch production of metal parts: when repeatability and a steady pace of work are important. For example, the production of brackets, clamps, heat exchangers of small series batches of eighty to five hundred pieces per cycle.
- Increased parts and dense layout: the working area of 180 × 180 mm allows placing larger single products or several components on one platform, increasing the output of parts per one launch.
- Transition from prototype to series: when the R&D stage is completed and it is necessary to launch stable production without switching to more expensive middle-class equipment.
- Control series and test samples: as part of the production cycle of certification or quality confirmation, when precision and repeatability of the metallurgical process are required.
- Aerospace components: production of titanium, aluminum, and superalloy parts of small and medium complexity for aircraft engines, fuselages, and system equipment.
- Medical and dental implants: manufacturing of personalized titanium structures, crowns, bridges, and orthopedic components with sanitary quality assurance.
- Dental prosthetics production: manufacturing of frameworks for bridges and crowns from gold and cobalt-chrome alloys with submillimeter precision.
- Tool production: creation of individual molds, stamps, and inserts for injection molding or embossing, taking into account the specific geometry of the product.
